Journalism Is Both Old And New. The Profession Has Been

Journalism is both old and new. The profession has been around for hundreds of years, but it is always changing and reinventing itself. With these changes, the question of what is right and what is wrong is not always clear, but journalists still must attempt to answer those questions. Reporters, editors and anyone else practicing journalism must be held to a high standard of ethics across the board. Journalists owe it to the public to practice this high standard of reporting, as journalists work to serve the public. Listed below are several principles a journalist must keep in mind when practicing journalism in order to be ethical. Show compassion when needed Journalists may come across topics that are emotionally-straining and difficult to cover, such as a person’s death or a natural disaster. In their coverage, journalists may choose to interview people who are still reeling from such a tragedy. If they choose to do this, journalists must remember to be courteous to their sources while also maintaining a professional boundary. Take the sources’ protection into consideration. Make it clear that you are a reporter. Explain why their comments could be valuable to the story. Be independent from all The sources do not write the story, the reporter does. If a source tries to stop a fact from going into print or being broadcasted on the evening news, try to understand why that source would want that. Could the fact harm their career if it is made public? Could the fact coming to light make way for helpful reforms to a broken system? Is sharing the fact libelous? High-ranking newsroom employees, such as a desk editor or news director, should be involved in this debate and analysis of the sources’ request with the reporter. News outlets have the right editorial independence. Journalists must also be wary of sources who are trying to use them to get a story published the way they want it.
